  I frequently pick up pennies...and I store them in my desk drawer at work...I currently have $.21...what am I going to do with this change? I don't know...probably let it sit there.
  
  After reading your post, I feel guilty about the interest it could be earning!

  @SD: Obviously you'll be better off if you save a few more pennies, but hey - eventually you'll get a "free" cup of coffee out of it. I love that feeling, personally....

  I save all of my change in a jar. I have one at home and at work. After a few months I bring them to a Coinstar an give myself a little paycheck, it usually mounts up to 50-100 dollars. Then I use that money for whatever I want be it clothes or maybe a little dinner. Change adds up after awhile :-)

  David - please tell me you harvest the good stuff and only put the small change in the coinstar? I think they charge 10%.

  I have to admit that I do not like picking stuff up from anywhere. All I can think of is who stepped on it, how many dogs peed on it, etc... But I guess you could argue about all the money that are in current circulation. Who knows who had it before I got my change in the store and where it's been... Ok, I am not OC ;o)) Breath deeply... IN.... OUT.... IN... OUT..... ;O))

  @Mike: I use Coinstar's feature where they give you an amazon.com gift certificate instead of cash. If you opt for a gift certificate it's a straight-up no-fee transaction (you get the full value). You're right, the cash option is a bit of a ripoff.
  
  @Lora: I thought of that, too - but in general with your money it's better not to think of where it came from or where it's been or who has had it in their unwashed pants pocket before you got it, isn't it?

  I save all my change, if I buy something for $1.07 I hand them $2.00, and we have a kind of big family( 5 kids) so every Christmas we count it up and it's anywhere's from $3-$500.00, and then it's about the same at vacation time(late July -Aug.) it's nice to have a weeks room on the ocean paid for (more or less for free) ..yes my husband saves his too, but he'll give the .07 , where I don't , but all in all he saves it.. and our kids think it's cool. so if they find pennies or change on the ground , they contribute , ( and they feel like they helped pay!) yes .. it's awesome =]

  I always pick up change that I see unless it is in the street and I am going to get run over picking it up. Over the course of 8 years I found $100. This is an extra hundred dollars that I wouldn't have had if I hadn't stooped down to pick up the change. Granted it wasn't all in pennies, although about a third of it was!

  The problem with picking up pennies is that they are amongst the filthiest coins around... Sometimes .01 Dollars is not worth the risk of three days of sick leave...
