I have started as an engineer and having just started do not consider myself an expert or anywhere close. But I realize that sometimes if someone calls and I am giving them any answer they are taking it as if I am an expert on the subject even if I point out that I am having to look everything up.
Due to this now when I call someone else (and it is easier to do on the phone because you do not see them and have preconceived notions about them) I try to think of who they are and what they really know.

Good point! I always wondered about relationship coaches / advises. So should I seek relationship advice from someone who married their college sweetheart and have been married happily for 20 years? Or should I choose the one who has been divorced three times, have had numerous lovers, and finally found their true love? Aaaagh, so confusing....!
One thing for sure about financial advice. There are a lot of experts when the economy is good. Remember there were so many stock experts, real estate investment experts, etc? Where did they all go?

@Akemi: I was reading some financial advice when the idea for this post came up - I was remembering how wrong so many "experts" were. It's certainly not limited to finance, though! Thanks, Akemi :)
