Steve, anyone who has an abiding interest in economics and individual versus group behavior should go back to 1968 and read Garrett Hardin's The Tragedy of the Commons. There's an explanation of the concept on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragedy_of_the_Com...), along with links to Hardin's original essay. Look into that and see if your opinion changes.

I'm all about giving new parents cash as a gift. That is the universal present which they can use for anything. I normally mention then intent is for the child's savings or college, but the parents can use it however they wish.
My brother and his wife had a baby two weeks ago, and I need to send them something... maybe a $50 gift card? oink-oink, baby! ;)
