I think your point about too many people buying into aphorisms is spot on .... just look at our current mess. It seems that at *every* juncture, someone was there saying "of course this asset can't go down - it ALWAYS goes up!" That's one of the frustrating things about personal finance: you can do everything "right" and still end up in pretty bad shape through no fault of your own. We can only manage risk - we can't get rid of it.
